Review: LEGO Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator 42055 Construction Toy

LEGO has always offered great toys for creative kids. Today LEGO sets are much more complicated than they were in the 90s, but that just means that your kids will be as entertained as ever and sharpen their creative abilities. The LEGO Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator is one of the best technic sets on the market for innovative kids.

This toy is one of the largest, most complex LEGO technic set ever made; with 3929 pieces, the LEGO Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator is perfect for boys and girls from 12-16 years old.

Who Should Use This Product?

This LEGO technic set is made, especially for kids who love LEGOs but need more of a challenge than some simpler sets. The Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator will take a long time to set up, no matter your skill level, so you know that your kids will be entertained for more than 30 minutes.

The primary use of this LEGO technic set is to fuel creative minds; that’s why I bought it. For this purpose, it delivers. Because the Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator is the most massive LEGO technic set ever made, it takes a long time to assemble. That’s exactly what I wanted from a toy.

And even when you do get this massive LEGO set assembled, the challenge doesn’t stop there. You and your kids can rebuild the technic set into a Mobile Aggregate Processing Plant.

What You Should Know

The Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator is not only a challenge to put together, but your kids can continue to play with it after it’s assembled. Some features include:

  • Motorized functions like forward and reverse driving, rotating bucket wheel, moving conveyor belt and revolving superstructure
  • Mega excavator
  • Mine-style dump truck
  • Remotely driveable excavator

These are just a few features that enhance the overall experience of the Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator, but they certainly offer more than the original LEGO sets.

My First Impressions

The first time you look at the Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator, it can seem daunting. Even if you’re just browsing Amazon, it’s hard to imagine that anyone would be able to sit down and put this toy together. If you have kids, you probably worry about them keeping track of all 3929 pieces that come in the set.

However, especially in a time when we’re looking for things that take up time, this toy is an excellent option for all of the same reasons that it does seem intimidating. Lots of pieces and complex instructions mean that your child will have to be patient and focus on their task.

But let me tell you, it’s not any less intimidating when you take all of the pieces out of the box. It can feel overwhelming when you’re looking at 3929 individual pieces instead of reading the number on the screen.

The instruction manual is huge and can seem like a task in itself to try to get through, but the directions are easy to understand and make the Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator extremely easy to build, despite what it might look like at first glance.

The Use Phase

When putting together the Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator, the manual is your best friend. Without it, there’s probably no chance that you’d be able to figure out where all of the pieces belong.

The LEGO Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator 42055 Construction Toy is an investment in both time and money, but it will not disappoint your kids who love building and need a challenge.

If you’re helping your kid who’s on the younger side of the age range, it will probably take you a few weeks to get this toy put together. Kids that are more experienced with larger sets like this will most likely have it together sooner.

Results

If you’re a kid, and even if you’re not, there’s nothing like the satisfaction of putting the last piece in place on a complex toy like this. The Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator solved the bored-child-problem in my house and gave them something that they had to use their brains for.

Final Thoughts

This toy is on the pricey side, but it’s worth it when you consider the time that your kid will have to spend on it and the benefits they get by putting it together. I give the Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator 5 stars for the challenge it provides and the amount of time it occupies the kids.
